摘要: The ability of phenolic hydroxyl groups, including catechol-type structures, in alkaline-treated kraft lignin to form a complex with and reduce the toxicity of aluminum was examined. The soda-cooked lignin was also used for comparison purpose. The contribution of catechol structures in the alkaline-treated kraft lignin and soda-cooked lignin to the complexation with aluminum was examined based on decreases in the pH of solutions with an initial pH of 9.0 on the addition of 0.1 M A1C1_3. The pH of solutions containing alkaline-treated kraft lignin and soda-cooked lignin did not decrease, although that of the solution containing protocatechuic acid did. These results indicate that the contribution of catechol structures in alkaline-treated kraft lignin and soda-cooked lignin to forming an aluminum complex was insignificant.Solubility in water, and the ability to form a complex with and reduce the toxicity of aluminum became lower after the modification of kraft lignin by diazomethane followed by alkaline treatments. This finding indicates that the phenolic hydroxyl groupsin alkaline-treated kraft lignin may help indirectly to form a complex with and reduce the toxicity of aluminum by increasing its water solubility.
