摘要: Agricultural water management, specifically irrigation with brine water (a freshwater-seawater mixture), is increasingly vital for stabilizing rice yields in freshwater-limited regions. This study investigated the role of nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) accumulation and translocation in the stem sheath on the yield of two salt-tolerant rice varieties i.e., Chaoyou1000 (CY1000) and Jingliangyou 534 (JLY534) and one salt-sensitive variety i.e., Longliangyou 8612 (LLY8612) under normal and brine irrigation during 2022 and 2023. The irrigation treatments were comprised of normal freshwater and 0.3 % and 0.6 % of brine water. Results showed that brine irrigation reduced NSC accumulation and translocation rates, however, salt-tolerant varieties exhibited greater NSC accumulation and translocation, contributing to higher grain yields. Both salt-tolerant varieties demonstrated increased numbers and area of vascular bundles in panicle neck, enhanced sucrose phosphate synthetase and sucrose synthase activities in panicle, and higher expressions of OsSUT1 and OsSUT2 in stem sheaths during heading stage. Furthermore, increased potassium (K+) content in stem sheath, higher K+/sodium (Na+) ratio, enhanced root vitality, and improved leaf net photosynthesis, and dry matter accumulation in salt-tolerant varieties promoted overall NSC translocation efficiency and maintained higher grain yields than salt-sensitive variety under brine irrigation. These findings underscore the crucial role of NSC translocation in salt-tolerant rice and optimizing brine water irrigation without compromising rice yields.
